In an effort to raise their fire power in the midst of ongoing operations against China, the defense forces have suggested equipping some 100 Heron drones with missiles to tackle enemy positions. The suggestion would see the drones armed with laser-guided rockets, long-range air to land missiles and anti-tank-guided missiles, the sources said.

The plan has been pending for several years now and in view of the growing hostile environment across the world the services are reviving it. India will also put further orders for the Heron Surveillance drones in the ongoing situation. India aims to improve its surveillance capabilities and firepower by placing orders for Heron surveillance drones and Israel’s Spike anti-tank guided missiles under the government’s emergency financial powers.

The Heron unmanned aerial vehicles are already in the Air Force, Navy, and Army and are currently being used extensively in the Ladakh sector by both Army surveillance and Target acquisition batteries as well as air force.
