Many were surprised when David Warner handed over the prize of the tournament-best. This award will go to Babar Azam.
Some are in favor of Babar, while others are in favor of Warner. Wasim Akram explained why the award for the best cricketer in the World Cup went to Warner without Babur.
Pakistan captain Babur is the highest run-getter in the tournament. He has scored 303 runs in 6 innings at an average of 60.60. Warner averaged 289 runs in 6 innings at 47.18. Babar has four half-centuries, Warner has three half-centuries.
Shoaib Akhtar has seen the tournament-best award in Babar’s hands as he is ahead of Babar’s run count, batting average and half-century. However, the former Pakistan pacer could not contain his anger as it was not. Warner tweeted that being the tournament-winner was an ‘unfair decision’. But Wasim Akram sees the matter through the eyes of analysts.
The legendary pacer told Pakistani sports channel A Sports, “They (selectors) have seen not only the most runs, but also the impact.” They have seen how much influence a player has made for his team in the tournament. In that respect, Warner alone has won some matches against Australia. They also won the World Cup. What’s next? ‘
Warner played three great innings against the West Indies, Pakistan and New Zealand. He played an unbeaten innings of 69 against the West Indies. Warner’s 49 off 30 balls against Pakistan in the semi-final laid the foundation for Australia’s victory.
The left-arm opener also played a key role in Australia’s 53-run innings against New Zealand in the final.
Babur scored 39 off 34 balls against Australia in the semi-final. He also set a record on the way to play that innings. Babar overtook his team’s batting advisor Matthew Hayden to set the record for most runs in a debut T20 World Cup. Hayden scored 265 runs in the 2006 Twenty20 World Cup.
Babur was in great form in the T20 World Cup this time but he could not take Pakistan to the final. But even though Warner played poorly in the beginning, he played a big role in the team’s victory by playing great innings as the tournament progressed.
