World Health Organization’s battle for a global vaccination program for Covid-19

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday urged countries to enter a global alliance aimed at ensuring access to COVID-19 vaccines for less developed nations, warning about the dangers of so-called “vaccine imperialism.” The COVAX Global Vaccine Facility is a system designed to collect funds from wealthy and charitable countries to create and distribute a Covid-19 vaccine equitably around the world. Its goal is to deliver by the end of 2021 2 billion doses of safe, approved Covid-19 vaccines.

The WHO has expressed concern that wealthy countries can impede attempts to end the pandemic by hosting vaccines for their own people. “We need to stop nationalism of the vaccines,” said WHO president Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during a virtual briefing on Tuesday. “The strategic and regional sharing of limited resources is really in the national interest of each country.”

WHO leaders have said that creating a structured global delivery network for COVID-19 vaccines that prioritizes those at the highest risk of getting sick, such as health care workers, will help curb coronavirus spread worldwide.
