Colombia confirmed top 20,000 deaths due to coronavirus

Reported deaths in Colombia due to Covid-19 on Tuesday topped 20,000 as cases exceeded 624,000, the health ministry said in its daily update. The Andean country has reported 20,052 deaths so far and novel coronavirus cases 624,069. It stands at 133,155 active cases.

After nearly five months of national lockdowns, Colombia terminated its initial quarantine steps this week. Declared by President Ivan Duque at the end of March, the quarantine was called upon to limit Covid-19 ‘s spread and lead to the closure of thousands of businesses, causing unemployment to soar.

Colombia is now in a selective quarantine process , the Government said. Restrictions on gatherings and large crowds will begin this month as the government monitors the virus spread as more economic activity continues with measures for protection in place.
