At least one person has been killed and at least 41 others injured when a volcano erupted on Mount Semeru in Indonesia’s East Java province. Local authorities say at least 300 families have been evacuated since the eruption. News from CNN.
The country’s top officials say ash from the eruption has covered villages. People have been seen running through the ashes and debris.
Indah Amperwati, deputy chief of Lumazang district near the volcano, told a news conference that one person had died in the eruption in the village of Kurah Kobokan. Most of the burn victims have been shifted to Penangal Primary Health Center. Authorities were unable to reach several villages as the road was blocked by mud and fallen trees, Indah Amperwati said.
Major General TNI Suharianto, head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), told a news conference that the army had been asked to be ready for any assistance.
Budi Santosa, head of the disaster management department in Indonesia’s East Java province, said the volcanic eruption had “severely damaged” two upazilas.
