Health Canada issues recall of Swagway X1 Hands-Free hoverboard

You must have heard that hundreds of thousands of self-balancing scooters or most popularly known as hoverboards are being recalled these days due to fire hazards. Some catch fire while on charging while others are catching fire somewhere out of the blue. Either way, the risks involved cannot be neglected. The latest in the recalling series is the Swagway hoverboard.

Health Canada on August 4, 2016, has recalled Swagway X1 Hands-Free self-balancing scooter, a popular hoverboard from the markets. This hoverboard has a term “Swagway” on its front side and comes in several colors viz. pink, gold, red, green, blue, black, and white. However, machines with serial numbers 000001-008000 having a silver sticker at the base or with serial number 020001 or higher having a white sticker are safe from this recall.

The primary concern of Health Canada behind this recall is that the hoverboard runs on a lithium-ion battery that can overheat at any point of time causing a fire explosion.

Canada, till now, has not seen any consumer incidents of injuries associated with the use of hoverboards. But the neighboring United States has faced 42 reports of batteries that are either catching fire or exploding with intense heat. Not only this, out of these 42 reports, 16 reports are of severe injuries like skin, arm, and leg burning or enormous property damage.

Consumers who have purchased this model of Swagway during September 2015 through March 2016 are requested to discontinue the use of Swagway X1 Hands-Free and chose one of the below-mentioned remedies:

  1. Get your hoverboard repaired from Swagway; the company will replace the lithium-ion battery with a new UL certified battery pack.
  2. Return your unit back to the company and Swagway will give you a credit of $200, with this credit you can buy a new UL 2272 certified Swagtron T1 or T3. Please note you can use this credit from December 31, 2016.

Whether you choose option 1 or 2, all your shipping costs will be covered by Swagway. If your product is included in this recall, then you will get full instructions regarding how to return your hoverboard.
