How To Identify Seasoned Firewood?

1. Weight 

Dry wood is always lighter than fresh wood. If you hold one seasoned log in one hand and one unseasoned log in another hand, you can notice the difference between weights. It is because seasoned wood has significantly lost its moisture content. Greenwood gets its weight from its moisture content that is almost 100%. 

2. Colour 

A freshly cut log is colourful and bright. As you season it, its colour begins to fade. In the end, the colour becomes dull, grey.

3. Bark 

You can easily remove the bark of seasoned firewood. The bark becomes loose with time. It is not easy to remove bark from a fresh log.     

4. Cracks 

Take a look at both ends of a log. If there are cracks, it is seasoned firewood. Keep in mind that some seasoned logs may not have cracks. Therefore, don’t rely on this factor only. Pay attention to other factors to figure out whether your bulk firewood in NSW is ready to use or not. 

5. Strength 

You can easily split and dent greenwood. Seasoned wood becomes dry and more compressed with time. 

6. Smell 

The sappy smell of green wood is pretty noticeable. Seasoned wood gives a classic woodsy smell. You will not notice any powerful scent in dry wood. 

7. Moisture Level 

The moisture content of green wood is extremely high. The moisture content of seasoned firewood is less than 10%. However, 20% moisture content is also acceptable. You can use a moisture meter to check the moisture content of your bulk firewood in NSW. Buy one from a local store. 

8. Sound 

Struck two logs against each other. If it makes a hollow sound, it is dry wood. Dull thud means the wood has high moisture content.

1. Type of Wood

You need to season softwood for 6 months only. On the other hand, you need to season oak and other hardwoods for at least one year. 

2. Right Time 

Summer is the best time to gather and prepare firewood for seasoning. Temperature is warmer during summer. Wood loses its moisture content fast. 

3. Split and Size 

Cut and split wood into pieces of similar size. This makes it easy to stack firewood. 

4. Keep It Outdoor 

Exposure to the sun is extremely important to season firewood. If you are seasoning it indoors, you are inviting termite into your house. Moreover, firewood will not season properly.         

5. Stack Correctly 

Sun and air should be able to reach each log. Make sure that no log touches the ground.
