China poses concerns relating to WeChat, TikTok in US trade talks

Business

Trade negotiators from the U.S. and China will be negotiating enforcing the phase one trade agreement in the coming days, with China expected to raise concerns around TikTok and WeChat, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday citing sources.

According to the report, agricultural purchases and the dollar-yuan exchange rate will also be among the topics to be discussed in the virtual meeting that could take place as early as this week, though a date has not been finalized. Last week, US President Donald Trump announced bans on US transactions with China-based proprietors of WeChat messaging app and TikTok video-sharing app.

The report comes one day after White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow said the US-China trade agreement was in “good” shape, given recent disputes over Hong Kong between the two nations, handling the coronavirus outbreak, data protection and trade tariffs.
