A South Korean national has crossed the border into North Korea. The South Korean military said in a statement on Sunday.
Reuters has described the incident of a South Korean citizen going to North Korea as a rare departure.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said a man was spotted on the eastern side of the demilitarized zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas around 9:20 pm local time on Saturday. Then they started a search operation.
We are confirming that the man crossed the military border into North Korea around 10:40 pm on Saturday,” the JCS said in a statement.
The JCS said it could not confirm whether the South Korean man who defected was alive. However, they sent a notice to North Korea through a military hotline to protect the man.
Crossing the border is considered illegal in South Korea.
North Korea closed its border in early 2020 in the wake of the Corona epidemic. The country has been following strict restrictions in dealing with Corona.
North Korea claims no coronary heart disease has been reported in the country so far.
In September 2020, a South Korean fisheries official went missing at sea. The man was shot dead by North Korean troops on suspicion of trespassing.
